Things You Should Never Put in Your Dishwasher

Dishwashers make our lives a whole lot easier. It is an essential device, and knowing what not to put it is critical because loading your dishwasher with the wrong types of items could lead to damage to your kitchen utensils, additional costs, and even harm your dishwasher to the degree in which it is broken. In this article are going to go over some of the items you should avoid putting into your dishwasher even if the label says it’s okay to do so.

Cast Iron Pans

Cast iron comes first in the order of items you shouldn’t put in your dishwasher. The high water pressure, heat, and detergent combination of the dishwasher are going to remove the special coating and oils of the cast iron. If you are able to, we advise you to avoid using harsh sponges and soaps altogether when using cast iron. Instead, try to use coarse salt to clean the cast iron pan.

Plastic Plates

Most dishes used, especially during the holidays, are meant to be festive with vibrant colors and designs and are plastic. Most of the time, it’s impossible to understand whether the plate is plastic or not because they can be very strong and durable and are great options in special times. However, no matter how strong they are, they cannot be put in a dishwasher. The hot temperature and detergents of dishwashers are too harsh on the plastics, so they can break after being washed a few times. Even if the package says it can be put in a dishwasher, not doing so is the best option.

Fine China or Crystal Sets

If you have a set of fine china or crystals that have been passed on for some generation, it’s best not to put them in the dishwasher if you still want to have a set of fine china that can be passed on. The overall condition of the dishwasher is too harsh on these types of porcelain, and even if they don’t break, they will be scratched or chipped.

Any Wood Item

Wood and dishwashers are enemies. High heat and moisture exposure can cause wood to crack over time. Your wood utensils can be significantly damaged from the water, high temperatures, and the length of a dishwasher cycle. So, don’t ever put any wooden utensils in the dishwasher.

Good Knives

Technically, you can put your best knives into the dishwasher, but we advise you to take a second to think before you do so. Because of the harsh environment created by the dishwasher, the edges of the blades might be dulled, and this is going to be very irritating when you need to use the knives and can cause rusting.
